Non communicable diseases in Africa

Non communicable diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases, are now the leading cause of death in most regions of the world.

Africa, home to 54 low- and middle-income countries, is expected to have the world’s largest increase in NCD deaths over the next decade.

This will impose a significant burden to the continent, which is also projected to see its population double within the next generation.

Key facts

Non communicable diseases
  • NCDs are the leading causes of death (accounting for 63%) in all regions of the world except Africa. However, WHO’s 2013 projections indicate that by 2020 the largest increases in NCD deaths will probably occur in Africa due to the rise of the middle class.
  • More than 16 million of the 38 million deaths attributed to NCDs each year occur before the age of 70; 82% of these ‘premature’ deaths occur in low and middle-income countries.

38 million people die from NCDs every year, more than all other diseases combined. Let’s do more.

What we do

We join the fight against the rise of NCDs in Africa by organizing outreaches and campaigns in various communities. We make people aware of their health status in relation to NCDs. We educate people on improving behaviors associated with NCDs.

With global health, we look more into epidemiology and research.  We also focus on training youth to influence policy towards decisions focused on NCDs. Youth participation in preventing the rise of NCDs is key in the movement.
